The Portal
Another photo from the “Places” series that explores photography and set design. This is a more recent piece and one that I hope will lead to many more. My goal was to focus on narratives with the absence of character. This set is based on an image from one of my favourite stories, Alice In Wonderland. The Tim Burton adaptation of the Lewis Carroll book has imagery that influenced my depiction of the scene where Alice finds a hallway full of doors. The juxtaposition of classical portraits with the mind-bending checked floor and the abandoned game of checkers give’s the place an unsettling and creepy atmosphere. Also the prominence of the door in the center of the set returns to a recurring theme of doorways in my work. This is a photograph taken with a digital camera, all furniture in this photo was hand painted, hand-picked, and designed by me.
